Mahishasura Mardini

Mahishasura: The Buffalo Demon Who Took On The Whole World

Mahishasura and His Dream of Immortality

Once upon a time, somewhere on the summit of a mountain, a strange figure sat in meditation. On his head, sat two horns, like a buffalo. This was Mahishasura, an ‘Asura’ or demon, with a single dream. He wanted to rule over all three worlds; Heaven, earth, as well as the underworld.

He prayed and prayed to Brahma, with such intensity, that the very ground he sat on trembled. Impressed, Brahma then appeared before him, asking him what he wished for. Mahishasura’s voice was clear, his demands were clearer. He said, “Give me immortality. Make it so I can never die!”

Upon hearing this, Brahma shook his head. He said “I cannot go against the laws of the universe. What is born must die.”

After thinking carefully, Mahishasura came up with a cunning idea. He told Brahma, “If I cannot be immortal, then make it so, that only a woman will be able to kill me”

Brahma granted his wish, but as a parting note, warned him, “Mahishasura, never underestimate women. Fate has its own way of surprising everyone, even the strongest.”

By then, Mahishasura was blinded by his pride. He ignored the warning Brahma gave him.

The Rise of Mahishasura

With his newfound powers, Mahishasura proceeded to unleash chaos. He first conquered the underworld, then stormed across earth, and finally, he charged into heaven itself.

Indra, the king of gods, stood against him, so did Yama, the god of death. Varuna, Agni, and countless others joined the battle, but nobody could defeat the buffalo-headed demon. One by one, the gods were defeated.

Soon, Mahishasura ruled all three worlds. What he wished for, as revenge for his father Rambha’s death, had come true. The world was drowning in fear, and even the trinity, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, watched, unable to help.

The Birth of the Goddess

The gods gathered in desperation with only one single question. What could be done against a foe protected by Brahma’s boon? Then, they remembered the loophole. Only a woman would be able to defeat him.

They came together to conduct a Yagna, a sacred fire ritual. They prayed, and poured all their energies into the fire, and them, from the fire, rose a figure that was the answer to all their problems.

She was radiant, fierce, and unstoppable. She was Katyayini, manifested in the sage Katyayan’s ashram, Jagadamba, the mother of the Universe. Later, she was given another title; Mahishasura Mardini, the slayer of Mahishasura. She was Durga. The story of Durga’s battle with Mahishasura would be unforgettable and find itself in folklore, and the battle would be celebrated over nine nights, as Navratri.
